Moulay Brahim is a small mountain village built into the rock above a narrow gorge on the western slopes of the High Atlas, on the road toward Asni before it climbs on to Imlil.
Unlike the flat-roofed kasbahs further south, its houses are stacked so steeply that the main street is really a long stone stairway, rising from the riverbed to the whitewashed shrine at its summit.
The village takes its name from the Sufi saint Moulay Brahim ben Ahmed Mghari, a revered sharifian holy man who withdrew from Marrakech to live an ascetic life on the nearby Kik Plateau, and who died in 1661.
A zawiya, or religious lodge, grew up around his tomb after his death, and the settlement that formed around it has drawn pilgrims ever since.
